PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) is the world's largest educational study aimed at assessing the literacy of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science, as well as in one additional innovative domain.

PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) is an international study that evaluates the reading comprehension skills of fourth-grade students.

TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) assesses the achievement levels of fourth- and eighth-grade students in mathematics and science.

TALIS (Teaching and Learning International Survey) is an international study focused on exploring teachers' teaching practices, working conditions, and views on professional development.

PISA, PIRLS, TIMSS, and TALIS have different goals and approaches. Here are five key examples that compare these studies:

1. Scope of assessment.

- PISA: Tests 15-year-old students’ reading, math, and science skills.

- TALIS: Collects information on teachers’ teaching methods, working conditions, and professional development.

- PIRLS: Assesses reading literacy in fourth-grade students.

- TIMSS: Measures math and science achievement in fourth- and eighth-grade students.

2. Target audience

- PISA: Students participate.

- TALIS: Only teachers and school leaders participate.

- PIRLS and TIMSS: Include schools, students, teachers, and parents.

3. Assessment content

- PISA: Focuses on practical skills and problem-solving in everyday life.

- TALIS: Examines factors that influence the quality of education (e.g. teaching methods and opportunities for professional development).

- PIRLS and TIMSS: Assess knowledge in science and textbooks, with a greater focus on national curricula.

4. Assessment method and format

- PISA: Mainly computer-based, with questions aimed at solving real-life situations.

- TALIS: Conducted in the form of a questionnaire (for teachers and administrators).

- PIRLS and TIMSS: Questions are usually paper-based or computer-based, and test specific knowledge in science.

5. Age groups covered

- PISA: Students aged 15 and over.

- TALIS: Regardless of the age of teachers and administrators.

- PIRLS: Students aged approximately 9-10 (fourth grade).

- TIMSS: Students in fourth and eighth grades.

The PISA international assessment was conducted every three years until the 2025 cycle. However, starting from the next cycle, it is scheduled to be conducted every four years. The PIRLS study is conducted every five years, TIMSS every four years, and TALIS every five years.

Uzbekistan began participating in international assessment programs following a relevant resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers in 2018. To date, the country has participated for the first time in PIRLS 2021, PISA 2022, TIMSS 2023, and TALIS 2024. Additionally, preparations are underway to participate in the PISA 2025 and PIRLS 2026 studies.
